Middle School Counseling Center

Portland, OR 2024

Design Notes: The goal of this project was to add furnishings and decor to a middle school counseling center in a 100-year old building to help it feel more safe and welcoming for students. We wanted to create a space that de-stigmatized counseling by inviting them in with colorful neon signs, decor with positive messaging, and playful figurines. The sterility of the walls of windows was softened with gauzy, colorful curtains, and playful rugs and floor pillows were used to distract from the worn orange carpet. While we didn't have time or budget to modify the walls, floor, or ceiling, it was rewarding to see what new furnishings, decor, and plants did to enliven the room and get kids excited to spend time there!
